Located just south of Lake Manyara, about 120 km from Arusha, Tarangire spans over 2,850 square kilometers. From granite ridges to swamps, the park offers a variety of stunning landscapes.

How Did Tarangire Get Its Name?

The name “Tarangire” comes from two local languages:

  • “Tara” means river in Mbugwe language.
  • “Ngire” means warthog in Hadzabe language.
    Given the many warthogs in the area, it’s a fitting name!

How to Get to Tarangire National Park

  • By Air: Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport, then take a short charter flight to Kuro Airstrip within the park.
  • By Road: From Kilimanjaro International Airport, it’s a 2.5-hour drive (120 km) to the park.

  • Elephants: The park is famous for its large elephant herds, with over 1,000 elephants often seen together!
  • Diverse Wildlife: Expect to see giraffes, zebras, warthogs, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and more.
  • Birdwatching: With over 500 bird species, including hornbills, eagles, and the lilac-breasted roller, Tarangire is a birdwatcher’s dream.
  • Baobab Trees: These ancient trees can live up to 600 years and store up to 1,000 liters of water in their trunks.
