Usambara Mountains
DESCRIPTION
Usambara Mountains are lush and green covered with virgin tropical rainforest. The mountain’s highest peak is 2,290m and lies near Lushoto. Usambara is commonly split into 2 sub-ranges which are West and East Usambara Mountains. The East Usambara is less populated, smaller and closer to the coast. The West and East Usambara Mountains were formed by faulting and uplifting creating the drainage system of troughs that form many watersheds which provide water to a majority of the population of northwest Tanzania.
The range is accessible from the towns of Lushoto in the West and Amani in the East. The main center of visitors is the Western Usambara where you can walk through the arboretum, hike in the forest and as well look for old buildings from German and British colonial areas. Amazingly while hiking to the top of the mountains you will see sweeping hills, valleys, farmlands, picturesque villages and plantations everywhere you go.
WILDLIFE AND PLANTS
The tropical rainforest that has been isolated for long time is a home to many plants and trees. Over 2000 plant species and 275 tree species have been recorded in the area.
The mountains and the surrounding rainforest also hosts variety of animals and birds for you will see antelopes and monkeys. As per birds about 350 species are present including the Usambara Weavers, African violet, Crown eagle, Mountain buzzard and eastern bronze-naped pigeon.
HOW TO GET THERE
- From Tanga to Usambara it takes approximately 3hrs car drive.
- From Moshi to Usambara it takes about 6hrs car drive.
- From Arusha to Usambara it takes about 8hrs car drive.
WHAT TO DO
The activities to do include;
- Hiking to the Peak of Usambara Mountains.
- Cultural tour in Wasambaa Villages.
- Walking Safari in Vuli village, Magambo forest and Kwembago Forest.
WHEN TO GO
It is best to hike during the dry season from June to October because it is always muddy and not worth to hike during the rainy season that ranges from March through May.
TREKKING ADVICE
Before Mountain Climbing make some physical exercises for letting the body fit, practice deep and deliberate breathing. Pack enough food and when trekking ascend slowly.
ACCOMMODATIONS
There are camps and lodges found in the West and others in the East Usambara depending on where you are planning to visit.
- Amani Forest Camp, this is a camp located in the western Usambara Mountain.
- Mambo View Point Eco-lodge is a lodge located in the western Usambara Mountain.
- Magoroto Forest Estate is a lodge located in the Eastern Usambara Mountain.
