Kigosi National Park
OVERVIEW
In 1983 the scenery was recognized as a game reserve, its features convinced the government of the Late John Pombe Joseph Magufuli who authorized it as a national park in 2019. It is located in the north-western Tanzania with a minimum population of animals, plants, birds and insects. This stunning natural landscape characterized by grassland and thick trees extends from Bukombe, Mbogwe, Kahama up to Urambo district covering a total area of 8265km2.
The park is within Malagasi-moyowosi wetland which is large and a better example of East Africa flood plain wetland ecosystem in a good condition. As for real, it is a part of the vast shallow basin drained by 7 slow moving rivers including Nikonga, Malagalasi, Ugalla, Gombe, Kigosi and Moyowosi which wind sinuous paths through immense and complicated network of swamps, plains, lakes and woodlands.
WILDLIFE
Kigosi inhabits waterbucks, crocodiles, lions, hartebeests, buffaloes, cape clawless otter, leopards, topi, sitatunga, warthogs, baboons, zebra, sable, oribi, reedbucks, hyena, hippos, elands and variety of bird species like shoe-bill stork, great snipe and wattled cranes.
HOW TO GET THERE
By road, the park can be accessed by using a four wheel car for Tabora, Shinyanga, Kigoma and other regions in Tanzania.
By Air, you can also get to the park by charter flights heading to bush airstrip.
WHAT TO DO
Game viewing, this takes place in the woodlands and plains found in the scenery that will give you an opportunity to watch and learn more about nature and wildlife.
Bird watching, the presence of water birds and other static and migrant birds gives a wide range to have a special knowledge about birds.
Walking safari, this involves conducting a safari by foot, provides a chance to observe small, medium and large creatures in a close range.
WHEN TO GO
The park experiences two rainfall peaks annually which occur in February and November and the dry season ranges from June to September. It is worthy to explore the park all year round but due to road accessibility it is best to visit during the dry season of June to September.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Campsites are available in the park under authority’s control but also private camps are allowed. Because the park shares some areas with districts like Urambo, Biharamulo, Kahama, Mbogwe and Bukongwe there are accommodations that can suite your stay in those districts including; Kitumbu classic lodge and Lodge uyovu in Diobahika as well as Utalii lodge & bites in Nyakanazi.
